How to Install Windows on Hetzner

Introduction

Requirements

• A Hetzner account

• PuttyGen (for SSH key generation)

• Putty (for SSH access)

• A Windows image link ([See our links here])

• A Remote Desktop application

• Patience and persistence

Step 1: Create a Hetzner Server Instance

1. Log in to your Hetzner account and navigate to the server creation page.

2. Configure the following settings:
• Location: Choose any region you prefer.
• Image: Select Ubuntu or Debian.
• Type: Choose any standard server.
• SSH Key: Generate a new key using PuttyGen if you don’t have one.
• Name: Assign a name to your server.

3. Click Create and Buy to complete the setup.

Step 2: Install Windows on Hetzner

1. Enable Rescue Mode

• After the OS is installed, go to Rescue Mode in Hetzner’s dashboard.

• Click Enable Rescue and then Power Cycle to reboot your server into rescue mode.

2. Access Rescue Mode via SSH

• Use Putty or any SSH client to log in using the rescue credentials provided by Hetzner.

3. Run Windows Installation Script

• Copy and paste the following command into your SSH terminal:

wget -O- "Windows URL" | gunzip | dd of=/dev/sda

• Wait for the download and installation process to complete. Ignore any errors during the process.

4. Reboot and Access Windows

• Once installation is finished, power off and power on your VM to boot into normal mode.

• Use Remote Desktop (RDP) to access your Windows server.
